Msg. #1782 in *RRH* Posted on 08/05/91 at 13:37:46 To: All From: Wendy Marchuck Subject: Message Alert Problem My message bases (I'm not running TABBY yet) appear to be fine and not corrupted in any way. Yet, very often users are not alerted when new messages addressed to them are awaiting. They get the standard message at logon: "No new messages have been sent to you since your last call." yet they may have many new messages awaiting them. This is the second instance of this same problem occuring. I currently have 850 msgs. on my system and the last time this happened I had approx. this many too. Last time, I called and spoke to Freesoft tech support and Scott said that this was a first hearing of anything like this. His conclusion was that my base must indeed be corrupt (even though the bases have no apparent corruption) and the only thing I could do was to start fresh and wipe my messages out. <gasp!> Does anyone have an alternative suggestion than simply wiping out the bases? What in the world could be causing this alert problem? The only program (besides msg. edit) I've used that "looks" at the messages is Extract Messages originating from Forest Hills BBS (nice program and I doubt it is the cause). My sincerest thanks. The UserLog has a "mail waiting" flag that is set when a message is sent to a user. If the flag isn't set, Second Sight just announces that no messages are waiting. Yes, that does make a whole log of sense, Pete. But still being relatively new to SS, I don't have any ideas on how to "adjust" or correct the userlog for this problem. Would you have any suggestions on what I should do to get things straightened out or how to prevent this from happening in the future? The only outside application that I have used on the userlog to date has been TXT/2/UL and UL/2/TXT. Speaking of which, do you have any utilities or know of any that specifically will modify a user's upload and/or download credits? I from time to time need to modify these settings. Thanks! It lets you change almost anything about them. It's a commercial program, or at least it was. Right...as I discovered (and for the benefit of anyone else) if one is using the built in filesharing with System 7.0, it is best to turn filesharing off if you are using an unaccelerated 68000 Mac. I realized that _most_ of my callers call pretty infrequently and if they read any of the message sections they read <R>everse and usually tire before they come close to reading the 200 Echomac messages that I keep active. Other sections are similar. My advice is pare down the sections to under 1500 and bump the cache. If you use mehitabel (or your BBS's equivalent), try setting it to purge when there are over 300 messages in an area OR the messages are over 7 days old. This works like a charm for me -- and I carry about 25 echomail conferences now. Sometimes when downloading a file from a Un*x system (using zmodem, sz v3.11 or v3.14) to WK I've noticed this problem. WK will, for some reason, abort the download displaying the dialog box which indicates same. However sz does not recognize that WK aborted the transfer and continues sending data. After a very short time WK thinks that a Kermit download is being initiated and goes into Kermit receive mode. Of course, this aborts after several errors, but as soon as one Kermit receive ends another one starts. At this point WK is in an endless loop. Nothing I can do will stop WK from thinking that a Kermit receive is being initiated. I have even turned off the modem and WK still continues in this looping condition. I've tried killing the process with TaskIt, closing the file with Close File DA, nothing does any good. I have even waited around for an hour (with the modem turned off), but WK continues to loop. The only _apparent_ way to stop WK is hit the reset button. Not the best solution when the Mac is busy doing other things (like running a SS BBS). Ideas anyone??? Most will assume you mean "0" (zero) if you omit it. In other words, in the example used above ATLE will accomplish the same thing. On most modems, so will ATL1E1 for that matter. For most commands "0", "1" and nothing are all the same. This isn't true of commands to set registers, however (like ATS7=5). In those you MUST specify a number, zero or otherwise. However, you CAN combine a lot of commands in one line. Each users' higheest message read is stored in their Userlog record and if you're using a renumber utility that doesn't update that, their highest message could be higher than the new messages. If that happens, SS thinks they already read them. Mantissa - a program that pares down message sections does a very nice job of repairing (or at least deleting) bad ones. This may be your fix. Although I have registered my copy, I don't recall what the ShareWare fee is. Ralph can be reached on GEnie, and search the nodelist - I am pretty sure he runs a Fido BBS. Another program called "Jennifer" can be used over a modem while the BBS is active - or "live at the console". I don't recall what the fee is on that one either, but you can get it in the Freesoft forum on GEnie. I also have Jennifer available for FREQ or DL on Conus BBS. I have recently reduced the "visiting sysop" files section's clearance to the clearance level I use for anyone calling LD. A problem which seemed to occur off and on with my BBS. When this happens, the only way to quit was to restart the computer. I mentioned this problem to a few people and found that the same had occurred, but noone had a clue as to why!?!?! I can't tell you why it happens, but it has been my experience that the problem seems isolated to some sort of incompatibility between SS v2.1 and Mac System 6.0.3. Having not seen anything like full docs on FSP, I was wondering if FSP had a command that would append text to a text file? I have nearly 4000 files that I process daily for my ALLFILES, FILES, NEWFILES and informant.data listings. At this point I am running out of memory on my 4 MB Mac SE. I have to turn off all cache memory or it bombs. I was thinking I could process one section at a time and append the appropriate text to the appropriate text files - "clearing" in between. This would reduce the amount of memory needed by FSP to a small fraction of what it is now using. I have seen one instance of the "ADDTO" command in the docs I have. Does anyone know what this command does, if it will do it with text and what the "syntax" is - or what the appropriate command should be? Any help will be much appreciated! (I promise to share my new script with everyone when (if?)
